Blog EntryPetition to demand an apology from ABC NetworkOct 4, '07 11:56 PM
for everyone
Below is a petition going around the net regarding the derogatory remark made on Desperate Housewives by character Susan Meyer-Delpino.
To the producers of "Desperate Housewives" and ABC:

We are writing to express concern and hurt about a racially-discriminatory comment made in an episode of Desperate Housewives on 9/30/07. In a scene in which Susan was told by her gynecologist that she might be hitting menopause, she replied, "Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines."

As members and allies of the Filipino American community, we are writing to inform that this type of derogatory remark was discriminatory and hurtful, and such a comment was not necessary to maintain any humor in the show.  Additionally, a statement that devalues Filipinos in healthcare is extremely unfounded, considering the overwhelming presence of Filipinos and Filipino Americans in the medical field.  Filipinos are the second largest immigrant population in the United States, with many entering the U.S. (and successfully passing their U.S. licensing boards!) as doctors, nurses, and medical technicians.  In fact, the Philippines produces more U.S. nurses than any other country in the world.  So, to belittle the education, experience, or value of Filipino Americans in health care is extremely disrespectful and plain and simply ignorant. Many of the hospitals in major metropolitan areas of the U.S. (and the world) would not be able to operate without its Filipino and Filipino American staff members.

As Filipino Americans and allies, we band together to ensure that this type of hateful message should not be allowed to continue on our television and radio airwaves. Given the recent amounts of media attention that has been given to Michael Richards (against African Americans), Isaiah Washington (against gays), and Rosie O'Donnell (against Asian/Chinese Americans), it is ridiculous that this type of hateful speech made it through various screenwriters, the show's producers, the show's actors, and ABC itself.

We demand a public apology to the Filipino American community, and we demand the episode be edited to remove the ignorant and racist remark. We will not allow hateful messages against our community (or any other oppressed community) to continue.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned

An apology has already been posted by ABC.
Should anyone point accusing fingers, they should be directed at the writers and producers of the show, and not the actors/actresses. After all, they only say what's on the script/s, ergo it's the writers who come up with the swill and the producers okay the content. If you really want to exact some semblance of vengeance, then don't watch the shows.. don't buy the original desperated housewives dvds, buy pirated hahaha that should hurt..

what should make them realize how badly inculcated filipinos are in their medical industry is for all filipino physical therapists, nurses, medical technicians, care givers, orderlies, and doctors take a 2hour lunch or half the day off in protest...let's see if they'll make fun of the them then.
i agree, i wonder if teri hatcher at all questioned the line, has her publicist come out with any statement? sabi ni cesar montano, na naturingang member ng actors guild of america or some cherva like that, that it was ms hatcher's right to disagree with the script but anyhu, they're not the writers, there should be a capt of the ship presence here

I'm glad that ABC made a public apology in an effort to appease the offended parties. However, I think that some of these people are taking it to an extreme. ABC already said they will edit out that faux pas (possibly redo the scene) so that it won't be shone in reruns and in DVDs. Now I am reading about donations to support local charities, banning the show in local television, and other such ridiculous things. What's the point of milking it? I thought all we wanted was an apology? Well, we got that already. Be happy.

nako kamusta naman yon, ngawa ng ngawa, parang mga judyo, (peace tayo, anyway mayayaman naman sila)...pero ganto, ngawa ngawa pinoy pero did any of these doctors, nurses, physical therapists, risk their stay and income in the united states to stick it to the man and hmmmm maybe take a 2hour break or lunch for the whole afternoon in protest... na kung ala ang pinoy medical worker dun eh haler, halos stoppage na ng work.
